Post Match Comments:

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan said:

"I think both Harry (Redknapp) and myself will look at it probably the same: could've won it, could've lost it.

If we're honest, on the day a draw was right, but a 0-0 draw, I'm not sure. There were an awful lot of chances, but a combination of good goalkeeping and players being over-hasty, they were missed and it's a 0-0.

I don't think I can come here and say we deserved to win but we certainly deserved at least a draw."

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp said:
"If you said to me at the start of the week, win at Wembley, win at West Ham and take a point today, I would've been only too pleased. I just want to win the FA Cup - that's all that matters now to be perfectly truthful. If you said to me finish fifth or win the FA Cup, I want to win the Cup. I thought the pitch was difficult and wasn't conducive to great football."

  Match Report:

The points were shared on the south-coast, as Portsmouth and Newcastle United played out a 0-0 draw at Fratton Park.  Both teams created a string of chances, with neither side able to stamp its authority on the match.

With Portsmouth reaching its first F.A. Cup Final in 69 years last weekend, the game was played in a carnival atmosphere, as the home fans celebrated this achievement.

It was Newcastle who took the early initiative however, firstly striker Obafemi Martins tested Portsmouth and England goalkeeper, David James, from distance, and then Geremi threatened from a free kick.

Portsmouth finally sprang into life midway through the half, midfielder Papa Bouba Diop struck a poor shot well wide, and then striker Kanu failed to convert a half chance.

The first half was a tight midfield battle, with Newcastle forcing several corners, with poor delivery letting them down.

Early in the second half, a thirty-yard ball played Portsmouth striker, Jermain Defoe, through on goal, but he fired his strike wide of the goal from inside the box.

Joey Barton then played a fine ball to release Martins into the Portsmouth area, his shot from a tight angle forced a good save out of James.

With 15 minutes left in the game, the best chance of the afternoon fell to Newcastle striker Michael Owen, who was looking to make it five goals in five games for the Magpies.  The Portsmouth defence failed to clear a Newcastle corner, the ball fell to Owen 5 yards out, however his powerful shot hit James on the forehead and bounced safely over the crossbar.

A bending strike from Geremi forced James into another fine save, as Newcastle looked then only team capable of mustering a winning goal.

However, the deadlock was not broken and the match ended 0-0.

We certainly could have won this game, and on another day, Michael Owen's shot would have flew straight past David James. However, it was another positive performance from Keegan's rejuvenated men, as we stretch our unbeaten run to five games.
