A sunny Bolton and the season was about kick off nothing could spoil today could it?
Well in the bar the Sunderland game was on which gave the lads something to sing about but then on comes Chopra and that story was wrote.
As those around me muttered and slagged the lad off, I thought lets just get on with our game and Big Sam v Little Sammy.
A Charles N'Zogbia goal set Newcastle on the road to a win followed by two from Obafemi Martins. In the first half I thought Big Sam had sent out Brazil and people around me were pinching themselves to make sure they were not dreaming. But the second half the Real Newcastle United turned up, not to worry though they are still a better team then last seasons Newcastle.
N'Zogbia struck first when his 11th minute free-kick found away past the Bolton defenders and keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen but none of us knew who scored at the time or it had it took a deflection or what? Now this is real football no action replays the season had got off to a really great start.
So now it was Martins turn in the limelight as a perfect James Milner cross found him an one acrobatic overhead kick latter we were 2 - 0 up and only 21 minutes into the game.
Bolton had their own chance as well with our old mate Gary Speed's being the best but we managed to clear it off the line with a little help from Smith and Taylor.
Then on 27 minutes Martins only goes and makes it 3-0 with his second goal of the game. It was a cheeky shot which had a bit of luck, as from about 20 yards took a deflection off Bolton defender Abdoulaye Faye to leave Jaaskelainen stranded.
Bolton struggled to find their shape or rhythm as Newcastle just seemed to grow in stature as well as confidence. Players were shooting from anywhere and Martins was unlucky on 35 minutes when his shot went wide of the far post.
No one around me wanted the half-time whistle but it had to come we were all in a daze and the number of Bolton fans had seemed to have diminished some what.
Little Sammy made a change at half-time, El-Hadji Diouf on for Ricardo Vaz Te, this had an effect and Bolton looked more of a threat and Stephen Harper was tested on the 47th minute. He was equal to the shot by Gary Speed from the edge of the area as Anelka set the ball up for Speed.
This was more like the Newcastle we were used to as Bolton pulled a goal back through Anelka after a return pass from Nolan in the 50th minute when the French striker rounded Steve Harper and calmly slotted home in the corner.
This gave Bolton a new lease of life and a glimmer of hope while us Toon fans started to wonder what fate had in store for us now.
Little Sammy took Davies off in the 59th minute and brought former Fulham striker Heidar Helguson on.
Newcastle was unable to raise their tempo but Geremi went closest with a free kick from distance in the 61st minute.
Helguson was then given a yellow card by referee Chris Foy 67th minute for leaving Rozehnal on the floor.
It was now time for Big Sam to make some tactical changes which he did in the 69th minute, on Nolberto Solano for Martins who left the pitch to much rejoicing from the Toon faithful. Then on 72nd minute Shola came on for Viduka. A more settled Toon was able to see out the rest of the game without too much trouble the only other change was 86th minute Ramage on for Milner.
Geremi was booked late on for allegedly throwing the ball at linesman.
The only sour note was Nobby, he refused to acknowledge the fans singing his name in the warm ups and he headed straight off the pitch at the final whistle unlike the rest of the team.
So a fair result and a solid performance by the whole team its looking good for the season ahead even with the shaky start to the second-half.
