  Kevin Keegan's pre-game comments:
"We set a target six or seven games ago to win the mini-league in the bottom half of the table, and that's still our intention.

That's the only league we can win - we cannot get into Europe, we cannot get into the top four or anything like that, but we are trying to win that mini-league, and that will allow us to finish 12th at least.

Maybe, depending on other results for the teams above us, we might even sneak into 11th if it really went well and they dropped points.

There is still a lot to play for."

Socceroo and West Ham captain Lucas Neill said:
"With three games to go there is still plenty to play for and they will not come any tougher than Newcastle at home.

They are undefeated in their last six games and are on a good run of form. Kevin Keegan seems to be getting the balance right and with Owen, Martins and Viduka looking sharp we will have to be at our best to contain them."

 Match Report

My thoughts:

Newcastle travel to the capital in search of their third successive Premier League victory at Upton Park, and what would be their 1,000th post war league win.

The recent resurgence of Kevin Keegan's men, sees his side lie second in the current form table after going six games unbeaten, in which they have taken 14 points out of 18.

During that time the Newcastle defence has only conceded two goals, including three consecutive clean sheets, while at the other end they have scored twelve goals.

With no injury concerns Kevin Keegan will again name an unchanged side, in his now usual 4-3-3 system, meaning midfielder Nicky Butt will be making his 100th start for Newcastle.

To be sitting in 12th place with three games to go, two points behind Spurs, and five behind West Ham, is something most Newcastle fans couldn't have imaged just over a month ago. The transformation has been wonderful to watch, with every player contributing to some good all round performances.

Despite going into the game with remendous confidence, this should rank as a tough test of Keegan's men and a good gage of where they are at.

There is still plenty to play for this season, and a win here could see us move a step closer to finishing above Spurs.

West Ham are the most recent team to win the FA Cup with an all English side, and the last team to win the competition whilst outside of the top flight of English football. Both of these occurred when they beat Arsenal 1-0 in the 1980 FA Cup Final.
