  Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder said
To say I'm delighted would be an understatement - it was such an important win for us because of our recent results. Fenerbahce have got a terrific record and they showed they are a strong side. They are a very good team but no-one can deny that we thoroughly deserved our victory."

  Match Report:

We got our UEFA Cup group campaign off to a good start by beating Fenerbache 1-0 at St James' Park. Antoine Sibierski was the unlikely hero, scoring 11 minutes from time at the Gallowgate End.

Fenerbahce looked threatening on the break, but failed to really test Magpies keeper Steve Harper.

Obafemi Martins went close on numerous occasions for Newcastle, while their new-look back four held firm.

Damien Duff was asked to play left-back, with Babayaro injured, with Ramage and Taylor tried at together at centre-half for the first time. The played well and could have forced an extended run together in that position.

All in all a deserved victory, without a champagne performance, and a much needed morale boosting win.
